I came across this on the JPRS site:

Recent progress on the introduction of the new TLD (http://jpinfo.jp/event/2010/0402newTLDs.html)

At least that is what Google translates the title as. I can't quite make out the details though. Could someone with a better grasp of Japanese let us know if there is anything of interest in this article? It seems that they are mostly talking in general terms about what ICANN is working on so I am not sure if there is any reference to Japan's cctld specifically.

That's right. There's nothing I find interesting here.

Grrr. The title got my hopes up.

I also came across this comic book which seems to explain domains to kids. The last part seems to explain IDN's to some extent as well:

JPRS should spend their time, negotiating with yahoo, hatena, 2ch, mixi, ok wave, etc to make those services fully IDN compatible.

Without tackling those accessibility problems, IDNs will never replace ascii domains at a large scale.
