Interesting, I just saw this tweet from Kim Davies. He works at Icann where he runs the DNS root zone through IANA.

His post:

The ICANN Board agrees we can stick .рф, .امارات, . مصر, and .السعودية in the DNS root zone. #icann

So is it finally going to happen?

Great news - though I am curious what will the timeframe be to implement them into the root zone.

@alexd Same here. It would be nice to see the notes from the meeting held today and how long we are talking about. It's already been over 3 months.

Edit:

Just tweeted by Tina Dam

IDN ccTLD delegations for Egypt, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and UAE approved :) congratulations for reaching this milestone!

David...

well played.

I figured the Belgium meeting. Ooops.

I thought all the posts on Flemish and Walloon a few months back were
relevant to the timing. :)

Again, as a 4 year RD moonie ....( 2006 RD archive ---exhaustion / carpal tunnel syndrome healed)

...thank you.

Hell, I don't know. I don't even know who is in it. I used to be a Leeds supporter but lost interest about 30 years ago. Now that was foresight!

Yeah, we did lose most of our support once we stopped winning stuff ;)

I'm still here, 30 years later, "marching on together" as we drift further and further into oblivion. Whatever happened to "cycles" ....

I lost interest, not because they lost, but because they trashed the ferries and Paris BEFORE the match with Bayern Munich!

Yeah, but did you ever use those ferries? ;)

No excuses, honestly, except in 1975 I was 7 years old so don't remember it at all. My first real football memory was the 1980 World Cup in Argentina - how fantastic was that !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Maradona was the Rick Schwartz of Football.

Yep, Maradona was special (unlike Rick), but unfortunately like Rick, never made the 1980 World Cup - he was talented enough for sure, but so were other great #10s for Argentina..... and that proved enough to win the World Cup for them.

He did win the world cup 1986. And winning it 1980 was pretty hard to achieve as there was none in that year. ;)

Glad you spotted my (cough) deliberate mistake. It was of course the 1978 World Cup in Argentina when I was 10 years old.

But have you really never heard of the "alternative" football world cup which takes place every other 2 years? I thought with your very gay choice of colours it would have been your "thing".

Maradona was special in 1986 - incredible feet, incredible hands, incredible everything, probably doped up to the max, as he was later proved to have been most of his career :)

I would love to see a gay world cup. Maybe England could stand a chance there. Well... if there's no hetero stuff like penalty shootouts.

Sorry, but as there are already numerous-top flight, and openly gay players in the top league in the World, I find it difficult to understand why any of these guys would want to segregate themselves into an enterprise that is likely to yield very poor returns.

This is about as condescending as assuming that all non-US markets will use English ccTLDs.

I just looked up Justin Fashanu because I remember him as a footballer in the UK who "came out", and then unfortunately who took his own life. Some details here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Fashanu

Interesting read, but sad it seems he is still the only black british footballer to come out ... and this is 2010.

On a lighter note, and no disrespect to him or his family, who must have gone through a lot, I was looking at his list of clubs (long list) to see if I could find any "bent" (not Marcus or Darren...) as to his choice of club. Hard to tell, but ....

1985-1987 Brighton & Hove Albion 16 (2)
1988 Los Angeles Heat 12 (5)

After that, he just seems to go round the globe trying to find a team / place that will accept him ....

Sad :(

Well, for those reluctant to come out, participating in a Gay World Cup would seem a bit of a long shot.

Yep. Never going to happen. Just found it sad that after all this time (20 years!!), the first black british footballer to come out is still the only one.

I guess the argument these days is the same as the pop star one "why rock the boat when you are making tons of cash" ............... I bet the footballers' agents are falling over themselves to tell their clients that.
