It is not clear to me how an entire TLD can be down for so long.
Isn't the whole point that the enormous flat files are replicated in a dozen primary IANA root servers ?

The whole idea that a nation's Internet grid can be bodyslammed with a record error for that length of time simply boggles me.

They update all those servers at once using the same .txt file.

If the program generating that .txt. file from the registration DB hiccups and produces an incomplete file, and they don't have systems in place to test that file before it goes out to the name servers, well - you know the rest.
