Ha, google knows how to do it right.. they create a work environment that is fun and stable, which naturally causes everyone to want to give back while at the same time allowing for lots of free time / creativity.. no surprise that fun little things like that will come out of it.. probably the most fun logo I've ever played.. well the only logo I've ever played, neat!
