I saw this on a blog post today.

Are there particular puns or expressions that are being blocked with
the surnames of politicians as opposed to the single characters by themselves ?
thanks.
Steve
_________

The first character of "carrot" (???) is the surname of President Hu Jintao; the first character of "temperature" (??) is the surname of Premier Wen Jiabao; the second character of "study" (??) is the surname of Politburo member Xi Jinping.

Ever since Google left China, "carrot", "temperature", and "study" have been sensitive terms that you can't search for.

Any searches for the words or phrases containing the above characters, result in Google results page not resolving. i.e. 胡萝卜 (carrot) or any search containing the character 胡. 学习 (study) is unsearchable in google because the surname '习' is contained in it.

All above phrases/words/characters can be searched in censored Baidu. IDNs with the above characters are also unaffected, 学习.com - 胡萝卜.cn (not mine), both work correctly.

So the above post only relates to Google searches being blocked/censored..

Can someone explain the rationale behind blocking people from searching for the name of the president? In Molvania we always encourage people to search for and join the president's online fan club.
