Some people speculate and buy them and hope they can flip them to companies with the same name (or matching initials). In this case there is a publishing business with same letters that pops up on google and no doubt with a bit of research you can probably find dozens of other companies it would fit as well.

Godaddy auction off TM domains all the time, many of them owned by themselves.

Not necessarily illegal unless it is a trademark, but no doubt can fall into the catagory of unethical. Some domainser just collect bulk LLLL but especially like them if they have vowels.
