Certainly a big city, but this is a bit difficult to valuate because the EXACT match search score is low:

北京城 - BEIJING (CITY BOUNDARY?)
EXACT - 720
BROAD - 368,000

北京市 - BEIJING CITY
EXACT - 1,830,000
BROAD - 9,140,000

I guess it comes down to the term 城, where I've always seen 市 used as the popular symbol to indicate a "city". How is the other symbol used in this context? I'm sure it still has some value if we understood how the alternate symbol is being used.

Admittedly, 城 is less widely used than 市, even though both mean city.

城 has a more traditional touch, used for naturally formed population centers (i.e. cities with walls), as result it's mostly reserved for cities with longer history, a hint of prestige. On the other hand, you rarely see people use it with new cities such as "深圳城" (Shenzhen) or "海口城” (Haikou) .

Another meaning of 城 is referring to the downtown area of a city. In most of the 20th century, "北京城" means the area inside its 2nd-ring road (beltway), where 20-mile city walls were destroyed in 1950s.

市 is more widely used because it's part of the 3-tier Chinese government structure: Central government / province / city or county. There are a few provincial level cities as well -- such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing etc. (Most if not all **市.cn are reserved for local governments and not available for registration)

In short, yes 市 is more popular than 城, but 城 has its own flavor。 A RE project/hotel/restaurant/etc is more likely to be named as "北京城" not "北京市".

It could be named that way but I don't think it is "searched" that way....

pardon my ignorance..... but how/where did you get these numbers? I googled the whole Internet but couldn't find the formula.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="北京城"
About 1,240,000 results (0.32 seconds)
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q="北京市"
About 51,800,000 results (0.31 seconds)
the difference is nowhere near yours

sure it's not search-friendly. if search count is the only factor you are looking for, I have 啊.com (a.com), which should have a higher count than 北京.com....does that make it more valuable? :D

Google Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none)

Yes the Google Keyword Tool that sarcle linked to is the tool used for those numbers. It looks like you are looking at search results which would included the total number of pages indexed by google with that keyword term on the page. The other one, the Google Keyword Tool shows the number of searches performed by everyone on google. EXACT match will show the number of searches for that term alone, while BROAD match will show the number of searches containing that term but it could also contain other character with the search, as a result, EXACT match means a lot more. This doesn't always mean that terms with low search counts still aren't worth anything, there are many terms that certainly are.. the way you described this makes sense:

[北京城] - EXACT and standalone has only 720, but
北京城 - BROAD has a relatively higher score 368,000

This makes sense as you mentioned hotels, etc.. would be more likely to use it that way in combination with other words. Still a great name, just not searched as much as a standalone term.

thanks guys, good info. I did use the keywords tool a few years back but never noticed the exact/broad feature.
thanks everyone who voted or provided input; it helps me to have some idea on the value and set expectation.

Voted 0-500 but it's actually closer to the "zero" figure.

If anyone would ever want to use this as a Beijing city website, it definitely would not be this term...

you'll probably want to rethink your assertion if you know the local culture or ever lived there, this is a term "老北京” were fond of.

The new minisite 北京城.com (http://www.xn--1lq90irxe.com/) looks nice btw. makes me want to develop a multiplayer game based on it... history, walls, gates, defense, forbidden city, what else do you need?

anyway, this is not my city anymore, let it go ...

this is a brandable term, it is only worth money to someone keen to develop it.
