I checked the original announcement made by Yahoo Japan today and it sounded like a done deal.

This will have a big impact on Japan's search engine market.

By the way, this does not necessarily mean you will see exactly same serp on Google Japan and Yahoo Japan.

Yahoo Japan can still customize search result just like it does now with Yahoo Search. (Yahoo Japan is using the basic search technology of Yahoo.com.)

Because it is that customized part which currently wipes IDNs off the top of SERP, it's quite possible that Yahoo Japan would do the same with Google technology. So, we still don't know if this is a good news for IDN owners.

I think the important part of the news isn't the search bit, they'll be using Googles ADVERTISING platform too.

That's probably not good news.

Well, if currently IDNs get virtually no SERPs in Yahoo! - I can only see potential upside. Its hard to go down from 0.

Microsoft will take steps to block the Google-Yahoo Japan Partnership

Microsoft is going to try and block the Yahoo Japan - Google partnership (http://www.businessinsider.com/bing-is-the-biggest-loser-in-yahoo-japans-new-google-deal-2010-7), a company rep told us late last night.

"We plan to present evidence to the Japanese FTC explaining why we believe that this deal is substantially more harmful to competition than Google’s deal with Yahoo (http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/yahoo) in 2008 that the DOJ found to be illegal," says a Microsoft rep.

When Yahoo Japan, which operates mostly independent of Yahoo U.S., decided to partner with Google (http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/google) it blindsided Microsoft (http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/microsoft). After all, Yahoo and Microsoft are in the middle of a big partnership in U.S. It's safe to assume Microsoft thought it would work with Yahoo in Japan, too.

That didn't happen. Now, Google and Yahoo are joining forces to own 98% of the search market in Japan, according to Microsoft's estimates (http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-this-yahoo-google-japan-tie-up-is-bull-2010-7). That's more than Yahoo and Google would have owned in the U.S. when the companies were going to join forces to parry Microsoft's Yahoo takeover plans. The Department of Justice told Yahoo and Google they couldn't team up because they would own too much of the search market

So it's ok if Microsoft is a monopoly with "Windows" but it isn't OK for Yahoo to be the "Microsoft" of search engines in Japan?
