Other growth opportunities for VeriSign include new top level domain names, including IDN versions of its existing domains such as .com, said McLaughlin:

The second thing is we have growth opportunities right around that infrastructure related to like the new gTLDs I just discussed, both the new gTLDs themselves plus the internationalized version of the TLDs we run today. And if you take into account everything I’ve been saying about international growing very nicely, we think that there’s some growth opportunities around the non-English versions of the TLDs we run.

Your are not kidding. Most of Verisign's growth in the coming years will come through IDN. He would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to recognise that fact.

Verisign, 2001:

Internet use is increasing dramatically throughout the world. Users who speak a language other than English comprise one of the fastest growing groups. Current estimates are that non-English speakers will make up two-thirds of all Internet users by 2003. Despite this growth, the Internet remains an English-centric resource with barriers of entry to non-English speakers. One such barrier is a lack of IDN capability within the Domain Name System (DNS). Currently, the DNS supports only domain names consisting of letters from the Roman alphabet and digits. In response to the demand for support for domain names in characters used by other languages, the VeriSign Global Registry Services has developed the IDN Domain Names Testbed. We believe that by making it easier for people around the world to use the Internet in their own languages, internationalized domain names (IDNs) constitute an important step towards making the Internet a truly global medium. VeriSign Global Registry Services (VeriSign GRS) is now able to offer the opportunity to register domain names in scripts that support languages used by approximately 80 percent of the world's population.

And in other words from the press release announcing completion of the symantec deal

"With this transaction completed, VeriSign is now focused on the growing Internet infrastructure services business, where we plan to build on our expertise and record of success as the longtime operator of the .com and .net domain infrastructures," said Mark McLaughlin, VeriSign president and CEO. "We will continue the growth strategies related to our Registry services and Network Intelligence and Availability services by leveraging our existing infrastructure capabilities for new services, expanding internationally and pursuing new top-level domain opportunities."

the expanding internationally is 2 branches.

a- IDN.IDN for com/net ...which is great of course...

but also....

b- they want to be the data center for new gtld's , whether ASCII or IDN.

competing against Neustar etc
