.PL Domain Registrations Set to Pass 2 Million

Registrations of .PL domain names (http://www.todayisp.com/domain) jumped in quarter three, 2010, after a slowdown in the previous quarter to reach 1.9 million active domain names at the end of September with the increase the highest of any of the larger European ccTLDs.

As of close of business Monday (29/11) there were 1,966,284 .PL domain names registered with the two million mark set to be passed in December.

Of the 1.9 million .PL domain names, the quarterly report found that on average each registrant has 2.62 domain names and 63.2 per cent of the 728,000 unique registrants are companies.

In the year to the end of September, domain name registrations increased by around 24 per cent, the best of the ten largest European ccTLDs excluding .EU. Second was .FR (France) whose registrations grew by about 19.5 per cent over the same period while .NL (Netherlands), .IT (Italy), .BE (Belgium) and .UK (United Kingdom) all grew by between ten and 15 per cent.

However month-to-month registrations grew inconsistently, with registrations dropping off from March 2010 when registrations grew by 3.47 per cent. In July registrations hardly grew at all (0.09%) but from then on the growth has been stronger with September showing a 2.49 per cent increase. In total there were an additional 249,395 domain names registered at the end of September compared to the end of June.

The distribution of domain names continues to be dominated by registrations at the second level, which accounted for two-thirds (66.58%) of all registrations. The share of names registered in functional domains such as COM.PL AND ORG.PL dropped by 1.22 per cent and was equal to 20.02 per cent while the share of names registered in regional domains increased by 0.73 per cent to 13.40 per cent.
