I actually have a relative in Nanjing getting a host server for me.

My rather non-descriptive post was basically looking for affirmation of people not in China using Chinese web hosts with IDN's.

If any out there. What kind of success are you having?

Baidu is very good at indexing sites quickly, especially those hosted in China or HK, but doesn't display unicode in SERP... yet. So unless you have a very short IDN and nice looking punycode, don't bother because imo it looks like spam in the results.

There's also the matter of getting an ICP# if you intend to monetize your site. It's a bit of a risk if you don't.

Several ISPs are offering to get the license if you sign up with them.

Looks like it's a control issue instituted by the government. i.e., "Do as I say, the way I say or I'll shut your business down."

aka, the reverse mob. "You have a mighty nice business here, it would be a shame for something to happen to it."

That's cool. I thought they tightened this up. Care to list which ones?

Been a bit of a delay but last night I was able to finalize the account.

I'm using net.cn

According to my brother-in-law. While the license is mandatory it is basically just a means to register the person responsible for the website.

Was able to set up the account but it will be 30-40 days before the license is issue. I'm told it's just a formality. In the meantime I can publish to the web.

What if that person doesn't live in China? :D

I do not think you have to be a Chinese resident.

I will ask him and find out.
