I wrote about it before here.

Google Registers Chinese IDN (http://www.idnforums.com/forums/2258-google-chinese-name-sparks-wave-of-domain-name-registrations.html?highlight=google+chinese+domain)

But the site hadn't gone live until now.

歌谷.com (http://歌谷.com/) is owned by Google. Funny how they didn't make it live in the .cn version. It's a .com folks.

I'm confused too. 歌谷.com does not belong to Google!

Google should be 谷歌.com

So why is http://xn--flw451e.com/ ( 歌谷.com ) resolving to a Google homepage?
Or am I missing something very obvious...

It's not your fault, it's Google's!

They have chosen the worsest name they possibly could. 99% of Chinese can't tell the difference between 谷歌 and 歌谷!!! Because both of them mean NOTHING.

Yeah. :) I was messing around with terms and put that in and it went straight to google and thought SHIT! The waiting game is over.

Thanks to Giant for making that clear to me. I was just about to run with it to the other forums. That really would have been embarrasing.

It looks like your IDN Typo Squatters first victim. I guess they are simply squatting on the most likely typo and using masked forwarding to the Google.cn site, so that they can grow their traffic, prior to finding some effective way of monetizing it!

Either way it going to put Google under immense pressure to put the correct version up or everyone will start using the Typo!

Well if anything that is the best google idn typo. Would be like owning goggle.com or gogle.com. I have a feeling google will be going after them soon.

Woot, hurray for me. First time I've been fooled by a typo-squatter.

You are correct. Seeing what trouble this has caused already, Google will need to act on it. I would also suspect the real site not being to far away.

Actually, they chose a very good combination from a TM standpoint. The mistake they made, it would seem, was not investing a few dollars in the obvious variations before making the announcement.

It's unimaginable that the technical people at Google are so weak in literature. This blog article was written by a person with high school level of Chinese proficiency. 谷歌 does not mean "Valley Song", it means "Harvest Song" or "Crop Song".

I think the term 谷歌 was originally suggested in Traditional Chinese 榖歌 (crop song) as Dr. Kai Fu Lee is originally from Taiwan, but Simplified Chinese replaces 榖 with 谷 (valley), so people in China have difficulty knowing exactly "Valley Song" or "Harvest Song".

But "Harvest Song" is long gone and it is irrelevent to today's society. If people call it "Valley Song", that's not a good sign because the name really means "The song from the bottom" or "Song of Defeat". Google is just getting ready to do battles, why did they have to choose to start singing "Song of defeat"?

Please don't get me wrong. I wish Google succeed in China. Dr. Kai-Fu Lee is a brilliant scientist and a great man, I wish him all the best.

Note: I just read the original article in Chinese, the Chinese author did not call 谷歌 "Valley Song", it's the translator's mistake.

It's a joke that people from Google would mistaken 谷歌 as "Valley Song". But no, they won't.

歌 - Ge (Song)
谷 - Gu (Valley)

So 歌谷, is Ge Gu, which is the other way round.
