A list of undesirable sites may be published on zone.ru. First of all it concerns sites with extremist content or inappropriate language use.
There is already a similar list of unacceptable sites in the Russian .рф domain. The use of obscene words in the names of websites was prohibited from the beginning. 925 thousand sites in the ".рф" domain have already been registered, and checking them for violations is simpler than doing so for sites in the .ru domain which appeared in Russia in 1994. That is why there are so many sites with unacceptable names on the .ru net.
The list of forbidden names applicable to the .рф domain, will now also be used in relation to the .ru sites, reveals Olga Alexandrova-Myasina, an official of the Coordinating Center of National Domain Sites, speaking in an interview for VOR:
“All new sites will be filtered, and all the old ones will be registered. This is because we are responsible for the national domain and our major task is to protect the users of the internet from bad content such as swearing,” Olga Alexandrova-Myasina said.
Refusing to register an offensive site is not enough to fight inappropriate language and extremism on the internet, says Yury Sinodov, an IT expert:
“Restoring order on the internet requires looking at the content of the sites, as well as their names. For example, the name Kavkaz-center doesn't use offensive language, but it is common knowledge that the site has become a center of extremism, and several attempts have been made to shut it down, but so far in vain”, said Yury Sinodov.
A special commission of the Coordinating Center of National Domain Sites is drawing up a list of criteria to be met by bad websites and among those to be outlawed will be ones with unpalatable names. Experts at the Center remain convinced that the measure will clean up the internet, but to achieve the desired results, it is necessary to create a special police unit that would be in charge of fighting anti-social content on the internet, advises Yury Sinodov. There is already a move in Russia to do that. The police in St. Petersburg plan to bar access to 30 sites that promote the use of narcotics, at the start of next year.
