Nice find!

I picked up on this from browsing the site;

One important factor here is the server used for both development and to host the website. Some servers send default character sets to the browser, overwriting any character set defined within the webpage and this prevents the Cyrillic character set from showing clearly.

I've noticed my Russian IDNs get little traffic compared to some others with fewer exacts - wonder if this could have anything to do with it?

Disclaimer: I'm not technically minded!

No

what they are saying only has to do with display

Ok - so could it affect CTR if links aren't displaying properly?

No, parked pages don't have that issue.

I usually either hard code a page for a certain language, or detect what the surfer's browser is asking for and supply that language.

Only downfall for that is if a spider comes along and asks for the site in English when you really intended the site to be primarily in another language - it gets indexed incorrectly.

You can also ask the surfer which language they prefer and then store it in a cookie so they get the same language when they return at a later date.
