I'm getting a higher search for аватарка over аватара (about 8 times exact GAKT). Yandex might have better statistics, but I don't know how to use it, tbh. Аватар has the highest search, but that's specific to the movie.

So I think аватарка is correct (although the plural аватарки is the most searched).

Hopefully a native speaker can confirm this.

On the other way, аватарка and ава are the 'cute' slang variants of the term.
