Soon, people in all countries will be able to use their own language as part of their email addresses to send and receive mail, making the Internet more user friendly and diverse.
Kun Qian of Afilias' team in China said, "This event helped demonstrate the multi-language, cross-cultural capabilities that are coming to the Internet. This is an exciting time for the Internet — and it's exciting for Afilias to be part of it."

good new.

But what exactly do they mean by "public trials" ? If I remember correctly, the previous tests by Affilias were performed in a kind of sandbox where the recipient and sender had to be running the Affilias system. Is it still so ?

I don't think the "Afilias system" will be needed in the long term.

Postfix community have developed patches, it will be nice when they are included in the base package because then it will just be a matter of making some changes in the config files. They may even make it so that straight out of the box mail servers are configured to send and receive unicode addresses without any changes to config.
