The domains include the names of every city in China with populations of over 200,000 people, all 3,000 counties, all provinces, all municipalities, all Special Administrative Regions, and a number of key locations such as mountains.

i agree with wot and i think that is probably a defensive reg not for actual use.

China gov has 100% control of .CHINA they can block and use any word there they want to.

if so, why there is no report in China papers?
how long, sorry how many yrs will this protection last? will they also do the same to buy .世界? then cheers for the Chinese .IDN, they do nothing but to sign a contract with China gov, and would enjoy good earnings.
at the same time, China gov is cutting employees.
soon, it proves only dirty xx flowing.

It's possible they cut some kind of deal to get the names free or very cheaply.

It would actually be smart of the registry if they felt there was ANY real chance that this would mean the names got used. What new GTLD need more than anything else is actual use, in the real world, where people see them and think "hmmm, I need to get me a domain like that".

Good point. I also plan to give out some of my IDNs for free to market my website.

Giveaways almost I would guess. However I doubt if the names will get used. I think if you compare them with the .中国 that are reserved they will be the same names?
