This looks ominous:

Foreign registries which have not applied for Chinese market approval are advised to do so in the near term, as unapproved Top-Level Domains are likely to be taken off the market from July this year.... The new MIIT list of authorized TLDs is surprisingly small, and ...does not include industry heavyweights such as .com or .net.

.在线 and .中文网 are not on the authorised list even though, some time ago, the Chinese Government registered a heap of .在线 and .中文网 Domain Names.

It does sound ominous. Surprised there aren't more comments here and at that other forum. I'm finding it hard to believe.

i think they are serious but in practice little will happen. i think what could happen is that smaller foreign registries get banned. so don't invest in things like .co etc.

and down in the comments section -

Sorry quick amendments: "When "网站" and "网络" goes lives, it will also be among the top 10." I meant to say "公司" and "网络" which is both operated by CNNIC. These are old TLDs which was operated by CNNIC for a longest time before even new gTLDs. They have yet to port all their names over to the new gTLD and when they do, they are likely to be in the top 5

I had not thought about the 公司 and 网络 TLDs that exist under the MII root. Years ago I used to access them by using http://cesidianroot.net
