Hey VeriSign....not saying it should be 'free' to existing .com holders, but make it really cheap and rack up the attention
of the domain and general International markets with some BIG gtld numbers and attention for your new gTLD coms and nets.

You need some major uptake and resulting media attention to get the attention for local language domains as IDN.com (and new com/net GTLDs) and set yourselves up for a worldwide market with unlimited potential.

New customers are not going to be excited to buy IDN.com and ALSO have to pony up for IDN.comGTLD so someone doesn't squat on their domains. To register both the .com and .comIDN that's a double hit (close to $18) per name . A large percentage of Asia and India is not going to find that affordable to see any big uptake as Verisign's new products come out of the gate next year. Just my 2c

Couldn't agree more. THNIC gave .th registrants the priority to register their equivalents at no additional charge. If I recall correctly, they also gave trademark holders the first shot. Each idn through THNIC costs about $8 give or take. If Verisign wants to be competing with THNIC for Thai IDNS, they should consider employing a similar strategy to have a chance of success. Otherwise they will be shooting themselves in the foot imho.
