Japan is sitting on 8% of registrations at present. Was around 6% at start of landrush IIRC. Hopefully it'll increase now that GA is underway.

Dynadot dropped the landrush extortion fee bang on 0000 UTC.

Develop .com forward .コム is what I'm thinking. When matched.

Japan now responsible for 19% of all registrations. That's a good sign. Also a sign that landrush wasn't popular, and just serves to delay uptake.

Promising, but they're only 380jpy at Onamae:
http://www.onamae.com/newgtld/japanesecom/?btn_id=02_general_20160613

Seems like a one-day promotional pricing.

EDIT: I do really like the fact that it's listed third on their renewal fees page, right after .com and .net:
http://www.onamae.com/service/d-price/renew_price.html

Yes, that IS good to see.

Also, further down that page they're selling subdomains off 日本語.コム

93.5% of all registrations for 13/6/2016 were from Japanese Registary. This is 418 in total. US registered only 12 and Hong Kong 8. These could easily have been Japanese using foreign registries.

GMO Internet accounted for 424 or 94.9%. I would guess that represents Japanese buyers.

The real question is whether momentum is gaining or whether this is just a flash in the pan?

GMO Who?

After Berkens:

"GMO Registry, Inc. paid $41,501,000 in an ICANN auction for a similar new gTLD .Shop"

That's Who!!!

Another 100+ registrations via GMO. Japanese residents now sitting at 21%.

I've learned pessimism the hard way... the 380JPY (~$3.50) sale is still going on:

http://www.onamae.com/newgtld/japanesecom/?btn_id=02_japanesecom_20160615

Note that two days ago (on the first day of the launch) there was a countdown timer and when I posted in this thread there were only nine hours left on the sale. The countdown timer is now gone, but the sale continues.

GMO is selling the shit out of these, and we can only hope (possibly against our wiser judgement) that the sale leads to long term sites and type-in traffic and not just spammers buying the discount domains to destroy.

Still, Google's dot-everyone -- which was the first Japanese TLD -- never hit 4,000 registrations.

Promising.

Would like to think they are going to get developed....but gotta think most of these are probably the local 'domainers'.

Is there a way to see how many different who.is there are for the registrations?

WTF Happened?

Did Japan DROP hundreds of IDNs?

Recently Japan was leading the US in Registrations.

Now this?...

United States 2,117 51.5%
Japan 920 22.4%

What really pisses me off is Verisign is willing to drop $125 million on .web, which will take them years to recover, yet with IDN's they screw their present customers, not just charging them for the .idn equivalent but screwing them even more with "premium" fees.

WTF, Verisign!

Something's wrong with those stats... GMO Internet is still #1 with 2,900 regs. GMO didn't become #1 until GA in Japan and they sold them at slashed prices.

The vast majority of GMO's regs were from Japan. Perhaps GMO is using a US vendor for whois privacy or something making it look like those are from the US?

EDIT: There are about 2500 domains missing from the GEO count. There are 6,119 domains in the Registrar table, but only 4,119 in the registrar table. From the registrar table we can see that most of those are from Japan.

EDIT 2: This solves it (at the bottom of the GEO table):
Private/Proxy Whois 2,510

I think some members had estimated that Verisign had earned close to $100 million from IDNs over the past 15 years. Apparently they decided to invest their IDN gains in .web

If anything Korea and China are lining up to be even more of a train crash.

We have one Chinese domain that in my opinion probably ain't worth a lot but my Partner's opinion differs. Beyond that I don't expect to be investing in Chinese IDN.IDN. For me supremacy of Chinese IDN.com is a No Brainer.

After that, well who knows?

How many times are VeriSign prepared to rerun this train crash?

looks like its steadily going up. Hopefully verisign or some larger backing gives more push in this.

More importantly, how many of the views are from Japan. For my own, only 10% is from Japan.
