You are all aware that many different languages/scripts can be used in .com domain names. But what of .닷컴 (.com in Korean Hangeul) and .コム (.com in Japanese Katakana)? Same as .com, one can have many different scripts, including Egyptian Hieroglyphs. See https://www.iana.org/domains/idn-tables

Cool! I see that you can also register cuneiform domains in .com (cuneiform is the writing system used on ancient Babylonian clay tablets). I don't know when Verisign will apply for the .com-in-cuneiform gTLD, however.

I have just experimented with Dynadot's IDN Search https://www.dynadot.com/domain/idn-search.html with an Egyptian Hieroglyph label. Here are some of the results

① domains which dynadot indicate I can register an Egyptian Hieroglyph label include .com .net .life .닷컴 .닷넷 .コム .pub .pizza .marketing .university .商店 .企业 .游戏 .娱乐
② domains which dynadot indicate I cannot register an Egyptian Hieroglyph label include .co .club .org .me .earth .中国 .在线 .中文网 .公司 .みんな .网站. Dynadot indicates with the text "This is not a valid domain according to the registry".
③ for some of the domains, dynadot thinks the Egyptian Hieroglyph label I used is actually already registered which it is not. These supposed registered Egyptian Hieroglyph label domains include .fun .xyz .asia .website

Note: I cannot put the Egyptian Hieroglyph label I used in this post as this bulletin board system cannot handle unicode characters whose codepoint is > FFFF. Egyptian Hieroglyph unicode characters are in the range 13000 to 1342F. If you would like to try out the Egyptian Hieroglyph label I used with dynadot or other registrars you can copy it from my blog https://schappo.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/computer-science-internationalization.html

For other interested readers (since André undoubtedly already knows this):

In Unicode-ese, the codepoints in the range 0000 - FFFF are members of what is called the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP). This is the plane where IDNers (except for André and other adventurers) do their work. The codepoints for hieroglyphs (and cuneiform) are members of what is called the Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP), which is also informally known as the first "astral plane".

See this Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_(Unicode)) for more details about these planes, and others.

A lot of software (including apparently this bulletin board system) can only handle codepoints on the Basic Multilingual Plane. This will change over time, not because users will suddenly demand to write in cuneiform, but because the Supplementary Multilingual Plane contains the latest new emoji (see for example this StackOverflow question (https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5567249/what-are-the-most-common-non-bmp-unicode-characters-in-actual-use)).

Well,, so much for (the aim/dream) of IDNs becoming mainstream and allowing end users all over the world the ease of being able to navigate the web in their own native language.

Fifteen years since their launch and we have boffins talking about how interesting it is that Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Cuneiform domains can be registered with Korean and Japanese extensions.

Side splitting stuff. Big round of applause to Verisign, they've done a great job.:lol::lol:

Don't forget ICANN's SSAC. A big round of applause for them too!

Yes, ICANN's and Verisign's incompetence has been breathtaking and infuriating. The lack of end-user uptake has been disappointing (though perhaps reflective of something deeper than just the problems at Verisign and ICANN).

And it is sad, in a way, that the only live discussion thread in this once-bustling forum is on an esoteric topic that is of interest to perhaps half a dozen people (full disclosure: I'm one of them).

But now this one remaining thread, harmless and nerdy, has been hijacked for yet another ICANN/Versign gripefest.

Is that an improvement?

Yeah, i definitely shouldn't have left out ICANN's incompetence.

Is that an improvement?

Improvement on what though? As they say you can't polish a turd.

I believe petrified turds can actually be polished.

Yeah, looks like i missed that episode of Mythbusters

Looks like there may be hope after all :)

As a matter of fact after a large cull of IDNs i am starting the development of 100+ names at the moment. I'll let everyone here know if there is still any benefit of (EMD) Exact match domains on IDNS anymore.

I happened upon a collection of fossils and put them up on ebay. Someone bought them and it happened to be a specialist in fossilized turds. Seriously.

Turns out, the way they determine authenticity is by licking them:
She wrote a children's book about them (http://www.areallycrappystory.com/about-author).

Yeah, people will buy anything. Except IDNs.

Looking forward to your findings.

You happened upon a collection of fossilized turds? Dare i ask how?

Were these like fossilised dinosaur turds, or just the white dog turds you used to see everywhere when younger but never nowadays.

Udpate to a 2017 thread:

If you missed out on the Egyptian Hieroglyph landrush last year, you may have another chance. 2,000 more hieroglyphs are in the pipeline:
