Is there a way to find out when an available domain was last registered?

DomainTools.com but I think you might get a few freebies, but then you have to pay.

Or if you have a copy of every zone file from every single day since the early 90s you could do it yourself.. doubt anyone has that though. Even paid services only go back so far and even zone files aren't complete, as anything without DNS entered which is probably like another 1% still won't show. The only place that would have the complete data is the registry themselves.

Domaintools is offering a paid service called whois history lookup. This service reveals historical domain whois records from the very first time the domain was originally registered until the current registration.

Free records search sites such as Whois.net allow you to find registration information for domain names. Even if the domain name is expired, the most current registration records are cached online.
