It seems that for certain scripts I see a square box with a little question mark.

I assume I'm missing some fonts.

I thought that with a Mac I wouldn't have to worry about this stuff any more!

Is there one 'font pack' that fills in most of the gaps?

Don't think so, most of them are one by one and some not at all it would seem!

out of the frying pan into the fire.

welcome to the Mac. It's just like Micro$oft except it's white and sexy.

The default font supports most scripts.

You can download and install the same fonts that Windows uses by double clicking on the font file.

In fact, go ahead and install the default Windows fonts that are used on websites often:

Anandale Mono
Arial
Arial Black
Brush Script MT
Comic Sans MS
Georgia
Impact
Times New Roman
Trebuchet MS
Veranda

The Windows versions of these have more characters in each.
