It is rare to see city domains go for sale, so this is noteworthy to see a price like this. If idns parallel ascii it will be interesting to see how idn city prices ramp up. http://www.cheaphostingdirectory.com/news-domain-name-sale-for-branson-com-at-1-6-million-2109.html

Domain Name Sale for Branson.com at $1.6 Million

Branson, Missouri - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - June 6, 2006 - Branson.com has just been purchased for $1.6 million, in what is purpored to be one of the highest-priced domain sales of the year, as well as one of the most expensive domain name transactions of all time.

For publicly reported domain name sales, Branson.com is the 3rd highest price paid for a domain in 2006, the 21st most expensive of all time and the highest price ever paid for a city site. The site is a portal for Branson, Missouri, the ''Live Music Capital Of The World,'' a city that attracts over 7 million visitors annually.

Branson.com has not changed hands since its initial registration in 1995. Larry and Lianne Milton of Branson, Missouri, purchased the site in February 2006. After undergoing several months of creation and redesign, the new Branson.com offers information for both tourists and locals.

Residents of the area can find real estate, movie schedules, upcoming events and weather amongst many more areas that help with finding local information pertinent to the Branson area. Tourists are able to find lodging with maps, show schedules, and vacation packages and information. With an emphasis on being the most-up-to-date, concise and information-rich website about Branson, Branson.com's new design caters to both residents of the surrounding area as well as tourists wanting to visit the vacation hot-spot.

Has this sale been verified by anyone? Considering the amount of publicity the sale will generate, who knows if it is just a stunt?

If they paid 1.6 million for the domain hopefully they can pay a few hundred and put up a professional design ;P

Here is the story again in a different publication, the St. Louis business journal. I got the initial tipoff from DNJournal.

Well, will the American taxman go after the seller and buyer? $1.6 million will incur quite a lot of tax. It's not something that one can fake and then forget about it.

Anyway, another confirmation that Bill's Tokyo.net is worth lot in the future.

Major cities are one of the best guaranteed investments one can make in IDN.

Why?

1. PPC doesn't matter.
2. OVT counts doesn't matter.
3. Bids per click doesn't matter.
4. The business environment doesn't matter.
5. Whether companies use IDNs doesn't matter.
6. E-government is the future face of all governments.
7. Any government, even a town council can afford at least 10k - the price of planting a row of palm trees outside the city hall building.
8. The only thing that matters is whether IE7 supports IDNs.

the taxman would of course go after the seller(person making the $)

However if the buyer wants to sell in a few years he would have to pay some capital gains unless he can persuade the authorities that leasing a domain does not constitute "property". :)
