Good names, I would suggest holding on to
them for a few years.. who knows, fairly soon
we could be seeing domains like this resolve
properly in the browser bar, with future
versions of IE.

Thanks. So, you are saying you can't see them in the browser bar? What browser? Because I can in mine...

Hi. I am running IE7, and all I meant was
that in the future names like this may
resolve natively in the browser, i.e they
will not resolve to punycode in the browser
bar but will display the names in an original
format, i.e. the graphic/symbol (hopefully,
they will also not display that unfortunate
'warning' bar that you currently see in IE7!).

Some people will mock dingbats domains
saying they are useless, maybe they are.
I am not so wise as to know what the
future holds for these domains, but I do
know some of them are incredibly visual,
potentially desirable from a corp. branding
perspective and the way that technology
is heading they could evolve in to a normal
domain name, perhaps within the next 5 yrs.

The 8 ball could be a really good leisure/pool
type site, that appeals to a young (and image
conscious) demographic. From memory, I can't
think of any other dingbat graphic that has
a similar 'identity'. Good name.

If you're interested in number dingbats, these are still available :

Remember that there's no ascii-equivalent.

Bramiozo: yes, there are some good ones
there, but I think the 8 ball is the best (or
the only one worth bothering with) as it is
a well known phrase in the game of pool.

By the way, what did you mean by no ascii
equivalent?.. (and are you saying that as a
good thing or bad?).

..and what do you think about 'symbol' names
needing an ascii equiv, so they can pass the
'radio test'? e.g. $.com needing dollar.com
and/or dollarsign.com, so the name can be
promoted verbally?

I'd appreciate your thoughts, i've seen you
around in idn circles for the last 2 years or so
and I think you have some good ideas :-)

I can be short about the absence of ascii-equivalence, it's not possible to register 1.com....9.com so these symbols have not equivalent ascii-names in terms of branding.

8 - is "eight" in english but it is "huit" in french and "acht" in german (to name a few), a number domain is much more powerful than the spelled out counterparts in terms of branding because it is universal.

If the impossibility of type-ins would be funest, it would affect the "8"-symbols just as much as it would affect the other number-symbols but still intuition tells you that the "8"-symbols have a certain value, they represent a huge market (gambling for instance) and they are very powerful because of the symbolic nature. No they cannot be typed-in but the people can be made aware of ➑.com as a brand in itself.

Eight . com is representative
➑ .com is iconic

Yes, good point. The 8 ball is also a lucky
number in China, and to a lesser degree,
worldwide; exc. for pool and gaming.

I think a few 'symbol' owners would be wise
to get their own language & foreign (translated)
representative terms for their symbols sometime
after IE7 goes live.

It is also worth mentioning that a 'representive'
term could be anything that literally describes
the symbol, e.g. in the case of 8 ball, you could
have eightball.com, or eightballsymbol.com, etc..
whichever term fits best with the symbol, and is
more commonly understood (and where there
are several possibilities try to reg. them all).

This, however, will be a little way 'down the road'
for most (if not all?) symbol owners as things
stand at the moment, but it is good to be aware
of this now.

Oh, and pm me Bramiozo if you have any idn's you
want to sell/swop, etc..

This is indeed a good move. It's not too early to do it.

and if it is, I am glad to see you making such a
wise move and securing your position (every

These really are the investments of the future.
