The IDN development included "Dingbat" and Special Character domains.  I have a few, including the black star ★.com, the white star, ☆.com, jet and medical symbol.

PDF documents at unicode.org show some of these these...

http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2700.pdf
http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2600.pdf

Also, check out: http://worldnames.net/

It will be interesting to see how or if these domains will be used in the future.  Perhaps someone will create a dingbat index with links to these domains or websites.

Although this is a very small part of the IDN world, I know a number of people have interest in these domains.  I even had an inquiry for my <snowman-character>.com
(xn--n3h.com).

I actually bought the card diamond at one time. Let its drop though as I considered it of no value, even though I previously had enquiries!

Bottom line is, how do you make use of characters that cannot be input from any standard keyboard anywhere in the world?

I think we should disassociate ourselves from these domains as they are typical of the source of ridicule that the anti-IDN lobby use. The main purpose of this forum is promote the adoption of IDN. I think promoting such novelty IDN is likely to be damaging rather than productive.

That's only my point of view, perhaps I am a bit of a purist. I am not even convinced of the merit of Latin IDN.

Don't mean to barge into your thread, but we're missing some notable sections, such as Korean.

IDNers here don't seem to have many Korean IDN, but with the sheer amount of drops happening in that area, we soon will.

I see the classifications thusly:

Worthy of their own sections
Arabic
Chinese
Japanese
Korean
Russian

Group of South and SE Asian
Thai, Viet, Indian, Tamil et al.

Group of Western European
Spanish, French etc

Other
Dingbats

Korean certainly merits a category as it is probably still the biggest in terms of registrations. Probably not much speculated outside Korea, but I know that Koreans have speculated quite widely outside their own language.

I would add:

Other Latin Scripts, which would include Vietnamese and most non-Mainland SE Asia and possibly a lot of little know African Languages of which there are literally thousands.

Other Cyrilic Scripts, including Ukranian and Central Asian Languages

Other Arabic Scripts, inlcuding Farsi, Urdu and Central Asian Languages

I would classify all South Asian other than Urdu as Indic Scripts and lump them together.

I think SE Asia also a merits a category of its own, which would include Thai, and eventually Burmese, other Indo Chinese Languages, which may include some historical writings in Vietnamese and Indonesian Languages.

I don't think it's a matter of worthiness, nor whether a specific language is more important than another it's a matter of what we collectively have as a group.

Typing the domain name into the address bar is not the only way to get to a website, and depending on the application, it may not even be the preferred method.  Consider three possibilities: search results, index or special link sites and cut-and-paste.

I really don't care what any "anti-IDN lobby" may say about any IDN, be it Japanese, Hebrew, Portuguese or Dingbat.  The fact is that Internet standards have included the creation and registration of these domains.  For such a domain, as strange as it may seem,  to be "real" and functional on the Internet, to me, is very interesting, and can present real commercial applications.

I can imagine new products for games or serious applications, with specialized keypads or keyboards, to access websites using these domains.

Also, consider the language of Dingbats.  The star symbol, for example, is not English, Spanish or Japanese.  It is truly International.  It is symbolic and recognized in every language.

Using links, search results, cut-and-paste, new hardware products, etc., there are a number of ways to get to such websites.  And you could always offer a companion domain (like mystarsite.com) to get to the website, just as you can do with any other IDN.

Dingbats, although the name sounds goofy, are real worldwide dot-com Internet domain names, with real international appeal. Is that just a novelty?

I just wanted to add...

What does green slime, the slinky and the hula hoop have in common? They are all novelty products. By definition, the word novelty means "something new or unusual." Dingbats are certainly new and unusual.

Novelty products attract people who have and spend money. It seems to me, that such "novelty domains" will attract some people. And I predict that some creative people will make good and profitable use of these domains.

Think about the new games, associated hardware and gadgets you could use, create or manufacture to be used with these dingbat domains. You had the vision to see value in language-specific IDNs. Look a little further!

Well, I would be much more comfortable with a Classification of Novelty as that describes them very well.

Whether you actually need an IDN domain for what you are describing is not at all clear to me. Specialised buttons on specialised gadgets could be programmed to run out a full Url of any kind. No specialist domains are really required to ensure accessibility. The gamer or whatever would not even need to be made aware of the URL at all.

For that matter, we could do away with all domains and just use IP addresses.

The premium IDN forum should include all IDN, whether it be Cambodian or Dingbats. There'll always be enthusiasts of all types of IDN.

Although I have admittedly lost interest in these domains, I do feel it is worth holding onto some of them.

Some of them receive traffic.

Interesting enough, yesterday was the one year mark for xn--84h.com (☻.com) Black smiley

It has received 709 visitors so far. This equates to almost 60 visitors a month.

This particular symbol is "fairly" easy to enter. If you are on a pc you can simply hold in alt and press the number 2 on the num pad.

Check out this site: http://symboldomains.com/ I remembering talking to this guy about a year ago and apparently he has received some decent offers for a few of his symbols. I would not mind owning his medical domain.

I have inventoried the entire pattern_syntax a while ago and found that more then 50% was available.
I fancy the numbers and the mathematical symbols,

I regged a few symbols of the list of which my lucky number is the favorite
in three flavors :)
❼.com
➆.com
➐.com

Still available are :
➎.com
➍.com
➉.com
➓.com
❺.com
➈.com
➅.com
➑.com
➌.com
❿.com
➄.com
➃.com
➁.com
❹.com
➒.com
➏.com
❽.com
➂.com
❻.com
➋.com
❾.com

Currently there are 9 (inactive ;) ) members.
I have inventoried
common
latin
greek
cyrillic
armenian
hebrew
arabic
hiragana
katakana
syriac
thaana
devanagari
bengali

a total of 2291 symbols.

If anyone wants to have access to the list I think now $25 is reasonable, pm me if interested or go to idntools.net and register,
your account will be activated when I receive $25 through paypal.

If there's interest I can make a script to update the entire list automatically and I will inventory more character sets, also there are some handy tools on there, a bulk whois checker and a bulk puny converter.

I am listening to you guys also I have to do a forum upgrade.
I can't make any changes until them.
Realistically I know you guys own all types of IDN domains but do each one spur discussion currently?

I just don't want to create a near empty category or dilute the content.
We don't have hundreds of members yet. That's why there's general discussion for everything else & as discussion rises I will move the threadfs to new topics.

That's why there's only one section for sales & appraisals. You guys can place anything there. This is the first thread about 1 character dingbats.

If it progresses into discussions I will make a new category for it.
