The Age joined the parade of mainstream media outlets writing about the domain business this week with an article titled "Property Boom Shifts Online" by Louisa Hearn. The article was aimed at readers who are unfamiliar with this business, so there is nothing in the article that veteran domain investors won't already be familiar with. However, it was nice to see a straight forward factual account of the business, rather than the kind of articles we've seen this month that have been tainted by biased or ill-informed writers who recklessly tried to tar all domain owners with the cybersquatter brush.

The real estate boom isn't over - it has simply shifted online with market speculators now buying, selling and renting virtual properties.

The practise of "domaining" may not be new, but it has recently evolved in such a dramatic fashion that it will form one of the key discussions points at a high-level internet conference in Marrakesh this week.

While internet speculation of the early dotcom era was all about a few precious domain names changing hands for vast sums, today's domaining boom is a different beast altogether.

Now anyone can play the market, either by buying up established domain names or thinking up their own creative concoctions.
