Hey guys,

I just bought advertising on Yandex for my IDN, and they didn't display my IDN domain, but displayed punycode instead. It looks to me like a possible violation of their contract. I've contacted them.

Another domainer on domenforum has written to Yandex and has gotten this response: "Cyrillic domains are not an Internet standard." (http://domenforum.net/showthread.php?t=8013)

I think it is time to bust them up and demand IDN support now.

Yandex sells advertising, and if we can get Yandex to display IDNs on their ad system, they are likely to do so for search results as well. This is very important to everyone with Cyrillic IDNs.

The difference is, while they can brush off search users, since they pay nothing, they are more likely to listen to those with whom they have a contract with, ie. advertisers, or potential advertisers, especially foreigners.

Therefore, I urge all of you to contact Yandex's ENGLISH speaking advertising account managers at +7 (495) 739-2222, yes, call them up, and also write adv@yandex-team.ru, and tell them you were thinking of advertising with Yandex, but they don't support IDNs. (http://advertising.yandex.ru/english/)

Yandex claims that 3 000 000 people search on their site daily. If these people don't see our IDNs, we won't see our profits. Let them know.

Tie up their advertising line! Have your coworkers, parents and grandparents call. Word must get out that Yandex must support IDNs!

If I am not mistaken a question about IDN was discussed in a Yandex.
They have told as soon as there will be qualitative sites which are interesting to users they will include support IDN

They should have figured out by now that there are hundreds of thousands of sites currently accessed by "Latin" urls, that would probably like to own their IDN url as well. The content is there to have the IDNs matched with for the most part.

Sounds as if they use the same PR consultant as Sedo.

Yes, but are they actually supporting IDN or just simply not understanding that the Punycode Version already works just like any other dot Com.

RD, i would have to guess your 2nd option ( simply not understanding that the Punycode Version already works just like any other dot Com.)

Does this show us anything?
if you go to http://webmaster.yandex.ru/check.xml (this is they're tool to check if the site is indexed) and enter the puny code xn--90ab1bi6c.com and hit "check" it comes back with выбор.com ..again with punycode in url...i guess the only thing it confirms that it is indexing idn's

they have a search in url option under advanced search but it appears off

Thanks. Knowing how to check is highly valued information!

I found something strange...

http://амтор.narod.ru/ = xn--80aygii.narod.ru (how did they get the puny to "go along" with ascii?)

Not really. It is commonplace to have subdomains in Unicode, not just Russia but Far East as well.
