Just thought I would share this since it has all the right talking points.

Banner ad for a japanese registrar and hosting plan. Translates as

"Simple and easy to remember." "It's the launch of our new Japanese domain service". "Now is your chance to pick up a Japanese language domain." "A domain name that is memorable in Japanese!" Monthly fee 1575 yen (tax included).

Well, if you happen to be Japanese, there are a ton of brandable domains still available - most of us have gone for generic keywords - but companies can go after their trademarks and there are lots of great brandable domains out there which may not make our speculator short lists because of low OVT or whatever.

The greater point should not be lost which is that this is a Japanese hosting company pushing Japanese IDNs to Japanese webmasters and it is recent. Perhaps this is part of an actual trend, perhaps this is still just an isolated incident. Of course, we hope for the former.
