My Dopa traffic has all but dried up, am I alone?

You're not alone. I think Baidu has stopped indexing IDNs parked with dopa and traffic has hence dropped off very sharply.

I once said that as much as 80 to 95% of traffic for asian idns come from search engines.

This is why showly (giving power(Traffic) for your Wesite to flight competitor) type of sites may be the solution.

On Dec 21, 2006 - the Chinese Govt limited traffic that is allowed to some IP blocks.

Here is a story on it:

China will set up a mirror server for Chinese netizens to visit Websites whose domain names end with .com or .net, Sina.com reported today.

Instead of being served by overseas domain servers for making visits, the new server will provide a domain name system or "DNS" function of its own, which will guarantee the security for netizens visiting from China and also raise the linking speed.

China Network Communications Group signed with US-based VeriSign Incorporation, the world's largest domain name registry services provider, to launch the Chinese mirror server of root domain name on December 14.

The US Department of Commerce announced last year the supervision of root domain name servers, whose second role is to continuously control the World Wide Web, which caused the security of online information to become a focus in the IT industry, Sina.com said.

Netizens visiting .com or .net Websites from China used to depend on overseas domain servers to provide DNS services, which means both the information upload or download can be inspected.

Touchring: are you saying that 80%-90% percent of traffic on dopa comes from baidu even without the owner actively indexing the domain?

I'm getting different data. traffic for one of my type-in none-parked domain has a decrease in traffic in Dec due to 50% decrease in direct traffic. Though that doesn't explain the sharper drop in silverclicks, it suggest otherwise as above .

Another reason I don't think this is true is from my parking experience. Sometimes I get a traffic domain, pretty sure before I parked it, it's not in baidu index; then as soon as it's parked, I receive a pretty consistent traffic pattern for a long time. Which would indicate a true type-in traffic domain, instead of silverclick doing anything to index the parked page.

That said, i'm not sure why silverclick parking is dropping off. At first i thought the big earthquake was a factor , but drop off happened on 11/17-18, before the earthquake.

I remember the time traffic first dropped off, silverclick was having some technical problem. But I never heard more about the nature of this problem and whether it was fixed.

kenne is right. It seems SC did not report the traffic as they promised last month.

What is odd is all my ACSII Pinyin domains' traffic (parked at SC) is down 50% .

Could you list the link to your source?

Based on the Chinese news I read, China did not set up the mirror server, it's VeriSign set up the mirror server with the help (contract) of 网通.

I know the reason.

I also have IDN names parked at dopa.

China goverment block all IDN.com names(not ID.cn names).

Below is one traffic stats of mine:

2006-11-12 25
2006-11-11 21
2006-11-10 6

China goverment unblock the IDN.com from 2006-11-10 and block it again on 2006-11-18.

This reason is not only for dopa ,it's for all Chinese IDN .com names.

A very very bad news!!!!

Interesting, but an IDN.com domain I developed continue to receive normal search engine traffic after 11/18, only the direct traffic was cut in half. That doesn't seem consistent with government action theory...

Absolutely false. I have stats can prove you wrong. The traffic of IDN.com's down because VeriSign's plugin fails.

Touchring: are you saying that 80%-90% percent of traffic on dopa comes from baidu even without the owner actively indexing the domain?

Well, for Japanese names, it's about more than 90% for sure, unless there's already a website that brands itself as idn.com (without owning it). Check with Olney.

For Chinese, i haven't got analytics hooked up (i mean the period before the sharp drop, 26th Oct based on my stats), so i don't know. If you got such historical data, you can make a good comparison. Pls also share stats if possible - just click on export to text/csv.

I'm getting different data. traffic for one of my type-in none-parked domain has a decrease in traffic in Dec due to 50% decrease in direct traffic. Though that doesn't explain the sharper drop in silverclicks, it suggest otherwise as above .

The sharper drop in silverclicks might be explained by a combination of factors it seems - perhaps baidu blocking and/or 50% decrease in direct traffic or Verisign plugin problem (this can easily be verified by installing the plugin and try out from china).

Logical, but still, we know that the chinese can access IDN.com via firefox (at least my office people in Xiamen can access). I've not got someone to experiment with Verisign plugin. We can also rule out the IE7 compatibility possibility since adoption is still negligible.

That said, i'm not sure why silverclick parking is dropping off. At first i thought the big earthquake was a factor , but drop off happened on 11/17-18, before the earthquake.

Well, i don't really know for sure the reasons. Even if the earthquake effects Dopa ad delivery, the sharp drop already happened 26th October. Dopa has been languishing since then.

I remember the time traffic first dropped off, silverclick was having some technical problem. But I never heard more about the nature of this problem and whether it was fixed.

Might be coincidence, here's my SC stats from 1st oct to date (some names removed for testing now and then but it's mostly consistent)

The traffic of IDN.com's down because VeriSign's plugin fails.

For Verisign plugin failure, we can get it tested using IE6 from China, anyone??

Before making such a claim. FIRSTLY, can you access IDN.com on your browser?

I know the reason.

I also have IDN names parked at dopa.

China goverment block all IDN.com names(not ID.cn names).

Below is one traffic stats of mine:

2006-11-20 1
2006-11-19 2
2006-11-17 11
2006-11-16 7
2006-11-15 12
2006-11-14 25
2006-11-13 23
2006-11-12 25
2006-11-11 21
2006-11-10 6

China goverment unblock the IDN.com from 2006-11-10 and block it again on 2006-11-18.

This reason is not only for dopa ,it's for all Chinese IDN .com names.

A very very bad news!!!!

Logical, but still, we know that the chinese can access IDN.com via firefox (at least my office people in Xiamen can access). I've not got someone to experiment with Verisign plugin. We can also rule out the IE7 compatibility possibility since adoption is still negligible.

You are right, Firefox and IE7 have never failed in China since their adoption as I have tested constantly.

IE6 + Plugin has failed globally soon after IE7's release. A member here pointed out it's probably disabled by IE7 Updates.

Well, i don't really know for sure the reasons. Even if the earthquake effects Dopa ad delivery, the sharp drop already happened 26th October. Dopa has been languishing since then.

Oct. 26 is the date by my stats.

Out of all the 400 or so domains I have at Silverclicks (combo of .com, .net and.cn), the only ones that are viewed are ones that I consider it to be US chinese speakers accessing. this is partly based on the domain name (eg. "electicals factories" in chinese) and partly because I used to have them at Sedo where I could see that it was North Americans that were accessing them (of course Chinese firewall meant no mainland China could view them on Sedo anyway, but the stats for them have stayed static since moving to Silverclicks, from which I'm deducing that it's the same continent viewing them).

So, unless all my other domain names are of no interest to anyone in mainland China :o - I'm guessing that for whatever reason - firewall, Verisign etc etc no one in China can see Silverclicks sites.

One way to test would be to move the domains to mini-sites with Google analytics and see if recorded traffic immediately increased. that's quite a task though. Better if someone who previously had good stats with SC and saw them plummet queries it direct with them to see what they say.

You're probably seeing speculators from North America (does not have to be Chinese) checking on your domains. As for mainland China, there are about 300 members here from there.

There's no increase in traffic after i moved a name from silverclicks to a minisite. Here's the network location stats i got from a minisite (see above post for Browser and Referral source stats):

A few conclusions:
1. Dopa servers are not banned in China.
2. idn.com works in China, or at least in some places in China.

Following a few days of steady traffic in the last two days traffic has disappeared completetly.

All my names are .com perhaps the searches are for .ws
