The gap, reported by the customs bureau on its Web site today, swelled by 65 percent from a year earlier. It was the fifth highest on record, exceeding the $15.5 billion median estimate of 20 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

Exports rose 33 percent from a year earlier. Imports jumped 27.5 percent, more than double December's gain, on purchases of industrial products including automobiles and machinery.

The Chinese brands, cars, electronics, are only starting to emerge. I project that if status quo continues, trade surplus can easily reach half a trillion a year in 5-7 years.
