I'm sure we have all come across domains that we can't register because they were variants of IDN already registered.

Is it likely that the problem will be resolved and thus these domains can be registered down the road? Ie, is it worthwhile to keep trying to register these domains every once in a while to see if they can be registered? Or do you think these domains can never be registered?

Olney started a list of these here:

List of Blocked, Reserved & unregisterable IDN Domain names (http://www.idnforums.com/forums/262-list-of-blocked-reserved-and-unregisterable-idn-domain-names.html)

I'm focusing on Japanese domains and I've been assuming the Variant Exists errors and failed registrations I have are because someone has already registered the Chinese version.

Of course, you never know whether a name is actually taken or not, until you try to register it. Who knows, you might get a lucky drop.
