Hello from Avtal

Let me introduce myself.

I started using the Internet in the mid 1980s, back when it was called the ARPAnet. In the mid 1990s, I used whois a few times to check the availability of some [English word].com domains. I never got around to registering them, which is why I am still working for a living.

In 2008 I registered a few crummy ascii domains and created some tiny websites, as a hobby.

In early 2009 I discovered IDNs (and this forum). I know a bit of Russian, so I brushed up on my old whois skills and was amazed to discover that many Russian words (even four-character ones) are still available as .coms. Since then I have acquired a small portfolio of IDNs. These are new registrations only; I don't think I know enough to risk my money on purchasing existing domains.

I've accumulated a few questions that I hope to ask the experts here, so I finally got around to registering.

I have a multi-decade history of leaping into something just as the smart money is leaving. You have been warned.

Re: Hello from Avtal
Welcome Avtal to IDNforums....

Please don't confuse making mistakes and being late to a market .

They are not the same thing.

Not buying domains in the mid 90's was not a mistake.
they were often $35 to $70 dollars back then.

Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista were search back then.

IDN's are less than 1% of dot com's
It is likely that only German will reach a 10% level in dot DE and dot com for
IDN's in combination .

Each language is going to have its own market peculiarities.

dot CN/dot com/ dot net/ dot HK/ dot TW/ dot SG for Chinese.

dot JP/dot com will have an issue with legacy dot co dot jp's for a while.
dot KR/dot com will have an issue with legacy dot co dot kr's as well.

In Russia... dot RU is not going to be an IDN with dot py.
so dot RF is going to have to do the heavy lifting with dot .рф

so dot com's as dot KOM's are likely to be quite good...1 word/ 2 word/ 3 word........

the corruption for the Dutch Auction is taken as a given..for dot .рф .

So with that...again welcome.....
