Actually, 대한민국 is South Korea. You're probably referring to 한국 or 남한, but they former originates from 대한민국 while the latter just is a usage of Chinese characters written in Korean. 남 = 南 = South 한 = 韓 = One Country.
I'd say 대한민국 is exactly South Korea in Korean. Well, I'm Korean and that's what I believe.
