Re: China Surpasses U.S. In Internet Use
Actually, what's interesting is the fact that the Chinese already spend 15x more time online than the US internet users. So, it's all about "WHEN", not "IF"....

Yes, the other important factor is disposable income, and the amount that is actually spent online, but in my book that too is very much WHEN not IF!

Yes, the middle class will increase in size and in wealth; reminds me to invest in gold and silver, expendable income can also be spent on luxurious items of course .

Yes, you should have got in three years ago when all the investors like Warren Buffet, who himself bought a hundred million ounces of silver. Should have been an indication something was on the move.
Of course that kind of sounds familiar to something else that's happening to today. I wonder what that could be.

Unlimited DSL in China only costs only a few dollars a mth, many kids spend their time online playing net games - it's far cheaper to play games on unlimited bandwidth than go outside.

Re: China Surpasses U.S. In Internet Use
Update on China: there are aprox 100 million internet users, out of which an estimated 60% log in using broadband (DSL). It costs around 20 dollars per month the cheaper broadband you can get. It's not really fast, but get the work done.
Other thing that's really big here in China are cybercafes. There are tons of them, spread all over the country. They're always in the dark, filled with 100's of computers, and an unlimited number of chinese kids (12 to 20 years old) playing online games among each other for hours.
It’s really hard to say if China is beating the US in internet usage, but what is really big here is cell phones (450 million users, 1BN SMS sent per day, and growing).
PS: I'm living in Shanghai, for anyone that needs more 'on site' information on internet here.
PS2: I'm also thinking about organizing an "IDN meeting" in Shanghai by the end of the year.

Re: China Surpasses U.S. In Internet Use
And the thing about China is that there's so much potential still to be tapped.
Garzuaga:
I'd be interested to know hoiw long you think China's present rate of economic expansion can be maintained, given possible social problems like the disparity in wealth between the coast and interior, etc. If China can keep expanding for a couple of decades, imagine the possibilities...

Yes, but Gold didn't even double in price did it? To make real money you'd have had to buy Gold Futures or something?

There's not much worry about the situation in China - it still has a lot of room to growth.
What i'm more worried of is the situation in America and the UK, new wars in middle east, binladen's stuffs. How's the real estate boom doing lately?

Inflation can be kept under control as long as the supply of labour exceeds the demand for it. If there is no serious risk of inflation 10 or even 20 per cent annual expansion is achievable. In dollar terms a lot of expansion can be achieved simply by revaluing the currency. It ain't China you should be worrying about!

Hey touchring,
The real estate boom is still going, but it's looking more than ever like a bubble to me. I don't think a fall is too far off. I'm in the minority on that, though. Most people think house prices will grow forever, and that it's different this time... but then they always think that, don't they?
As for the Middle East and Bin Laden... well, doesn't really impinge on anyone's daily life in the UK. Most people I know are more worried about the price of beer...
The reason I asked about China is that I understand it still has much more room for growth, but wanted to know whether other things will stop that. I understand that disparities in wealth are higher than ever, and that AIDS is becoming a big problem in the interior, though largely denied by the government. Am I right, or are these just scare stories?
Mike.

AIDS is a problem in almost every country, China will be no exception, but i do not see the problem developing to the extent of jeopardizing the whole country, in light of the following factors - 1). There's no issue of religion forbidding the use of condom in China, 2). People in China have good access to protection due to the single child policy.
The only real issue would be a bigtime flu pandemic - but that would affect everyone as well. Even that, China will be less affected than smaller countries - i remembered that China wasn't even seriously affected by the SARS outbreak. OTOH, South East Asian economies like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand sunk into recession that year when tourists stayed away. Stock market and real estate prices sunk at least 20-30%.

Re: China Surpasses U.S. In Internet Use
Never mind all the scare mongering. Even if China fell flat on its arse which is extremely unlikely, India would only come screaming through in its wake.
US Commericial Dominance is as much a relic of the 20th Century, as British Military Dominance was 19th Century. The US has a massive adjustment to make, as Britain had, or indeed as Britain still has too!
The whole thing has a Darwinian Edge to it. The West may have gained a temporary lead over the rest of the World, but there is little to suggest that there is going to be an lasting decisive advantage. The US is going to have to compete to secure it place at the table, just the same as everyone else.
It took decades for the British to adapt a new mindset to cope with the new realities.
In a world in which the pace of change is constantly accelerating, the US does have the luxury of decades to make the necessary adjustments.
